COOPERCEL – EXPERIENCE AND QUALITY
|
The only cellophane manufacturer in South America has almost seventy years of experience in this market, with continuous improvement of its production. The beginning was in 1941, when the industrial complex of Indústrias Reunidas Francisco Matarazzo (IRFM) started to produce cellophane, after developing the necessary technique and equipment to obtain the clear film from cellulose regeneration.
This is how the Celosul brand was created, and the plant was inaugurated in Ermelino Matarazzo, a neighborhood in the eastern part of the city of S. Paulo. |
 |
When the Matarazzo group ended its activities in 1994, some of the employees decided to establish the Coopercel cooperative, formed by the workers of Indústria Matarazzo, maintaining the cellophane production and trying to incorporate an increasing number of social-environmental criteria into the business.
In December 2997, Coopercel decided to go beyond the legal requirements that Coopercel was already meeting in relation to the treatment of effluents generated by its productive process. A contract with the basic sanitation company of the state of São Paulo (Sabesp) was signed, covering the collection and treatment of 10,500 m3 of non-domestic sewage per month.
In May 2008, Coopercel obtained the Green Seal, a certification issued by the National Council of Environmental Defense (NCED) to periodically prove that its life cycles are environment and society-friendly. Among the criteria required is the prohibition to use child labor, not jeopardize the consumers’ health and not cause a significant environmental impact.
The Coopercel cooperative has presently 120 members and an average monthly production of 150 ton, and the maximum production capacity can reach 300 ton. Although mainly large companies and cellophane resellers purchase the product, Coopercel is launching smaller amounts that can be marketed by supermarkets, with the objective of reaching the domestic consumers. |
